What is a DEB ID?

The DEB ID is a unique, lifetime identification number for students who take admission in open and distance learning (ODL) and online programmes. It is issued through the Distance Education Bureau (DEB) portal of the UGC, at deb.ugc.ac.in.

Who Needs a DEB ID?

As per UGC's announcement in August 2024, the DEB ID is required for admission to recognised ODL and online programmes from the 2024-25 academic year. Foreign learners are an exception. Many universities ask for it at the time of your online admission, so it is best to create it before you apply. Check your university's admission page for its exact rules.

Before You Start: You Need an ABC ID

The DEB portal asks for your ABC ID (Academic Bank of Credits ID) to create your DEB ID. If you do not have one yet, read our guide on how to create an ABC ID first.

Step-by-Step: Create Your DEB ID

The portal and its steps can change, so always follow the instructions shown on the official site.

What to Keep Ready

ABC ID vs DEB ID: The Difference

The ABC ID is your account in the Academic Bank of Credits, where your academic credits are stored. The DEB ID is a separate ID used for admission to ODL and online programmes. In simple words, you use your ABC ID to create your DEB ID. Read more about UGC approval and the eligibility criteria for an online MBA.
