Online degrees are now a regular part of higher education in India, yet many of the doubts people have about them are years old. Some of those doubts are fair, and some are simply outdated. Here are seven of the most common myths, what the facts actually are, and where the honest answer is "it depends".

01

Online degrees are not valid

The myth"An online degree is not a real degree."

The fact

A degree from a UGC-entitled university is legally valid in India. What matters is not whether a program is online or on campus, but whether the university has UGC entitlement to offer that program online. That is the line between a valid degree and a risky one. You can check this yourself on the official UGC website and the UGC-DEB portal. Our guide on what UGC approval means explains how.

02

Government jobs will not accept online degrees

The myth"You cannot apply for UPSC, banking or SSC with an online degree."

The fact

For recruitment, the key question is usually whether the degree is from a recognised, UGC-entitled university, and online and regular degrees from such universities are treated alike for eligibility in general. The honest caution is that every recruitment notification has its own rules, so read the eligibility clause of the exact exam you want. We break this down in Are Online Degrees Valid for Government Jobs?

03

Employers do not respect online degrees

The myth"No company will take my online degree seriously."

The fact

Employers mostly look at the university's reputation, the skills you can show and what you have done at work. Perception does vary by company and by country, so this is one area where "it depends" is the truthful answer. A recognised university, a good NAAC grade and real projects at work all help. For overseas plans, read Is an Online MBA from India Valid Abroad?, and see NAAC grades explained.

04

Online learning means no real teaching

The myth"You just get some videos and are left alone."

The fact

Good online programs combine live and recorded lectures, digital study material, assignments and faculty interaction. Quality still differs from one university to another, so before enrolling, ask how many live sessions there are, how doubts are cleared and whether you can see a sample class. 05

The exams are easy, or you can pass without studying

The myth"It is online, so exams are just a formality."

The fact

Online programs have a semester structure with assignments and exams, and exams are conducted under supervision such as remote proctoring or exam centres, depending on the university. You still have to study and the results still count. See exactly what to expect in How Online Degree Exams Work, and our tips for studying while working full-time.

06

If it costs less, it must be lower quality

The myth"A cheaper degree means a worse degree."

The fact

Online programs often cost less mainly because there is no campus stay, no relocation and no loss of salary, not because the degree is automatically weaker. But price is not a quality signal in either direction. A low fee does not make a program good, and a high fee does not make it better. Judge a program on recognition, curriculum, support and total cost. Our comparison Online MBA vs Regular MBA looks at both sides, and Zero Cost EMI explains how fees can be spread out.

07

You can just enrol and no paperwork is needed

The myth"I only need to pay the fee and start studying."

The fact

Students in recognised online programs are expected to complete official registrations, including the ABC ID (Academic Bank of Credits) and DEB registration. Skipping them can cause problems later with verification and further studies. Step-by-step help is in How to Create Your ABC ID and How to Create Your DEB ID.

The bottom line: online degrees are not automatically good or bad. Their value depends on the university behind them, the way you study, and how you use what you learn. Verify first, then decide.
